The International Terminal Building's Northern Concourse being expanded at Brisbane Airport, in a project costing $73 million that will be completed by international engineering enterprise Laing O'Rourke.Brisbane International Airport

The concept

Two new gates - Gates 73 and 74 - will be added to Brisbane International Airport, which will increase the capacity of the terminal and mean bigger aircraft like the majestic Airbus A380 can be suitably accommodated in new parking bays.
The expansion will also include upgrades and enhancements in the international terminal with new boarding zones and walk-out gates, a range of airside works and four aerobridges.
The concept will also deliver an extra 11,000 square metres of space.
This is not Laing O'Rourke's first involvement in expansion at Brisbane Airport, having previously been involved in several projects, including Brisbane Airport's impressive long-term parking.

The timing

Laing O'Rourke's region director Pat Cashin said early in September: "While preparatory works have been underway for a number of weeks, this week's official contract signing with BAC gets the planning phase formally underway."
Works began in September and the expansion is expected to be completed by late 2017.

During the works

During the expansion project, all landside and airside roads will remain operational and aircraft operations will be only minimally affected. This will help ensure the least disruption to both airlines and passengers.

The purpose

Brisbane Airport has announced that the expansion of the International Terminal's Northern Concourse is a direct result of significant growth in international business. The airport has been accommodating more international flights and the expansion will mean a continued increase in demand can be met into the future.
When completed, the expansion will mean airlines can increase their scheduled services and operate more efficiently as aircraft arrive and depart. Airlines will also be able to expand their boarding capacity, utilise extra space for aircraft layovers, and reduce boarding times for passengers.

About Brisbane Airport

In land size, Brisbane Airport is Australia's largest capital city airport, and the third busiest international airport in Australia. In the last year, 22.5 million passengers passed through Brisbane Airport's two major terminals. 28 airlines fly to 70 domestic and 28 international destinations, no less than 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Laing O'Rourke's region director Pat Cashin also commented: "We have a proud history of supporting Brisbane Airport's domestic and international terminals - including most recently the Domestic Terminal Access Project, connecting the car park and Airtrain to the main buildings, as well as a range of services across the wider precinct such as the Q-Catering base for QANTAS.
"This contract builds on our 30-plus years of aviation delivery experience, and means we will be concurrently delivering aviation infrastructure in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria," he added.
